Anyway to share my joy in coming back to the blogging world, I decided to do a freebie! I hope it's not too late to use on Valentine's Day, but even so you could just send it anytime. Cause I kept the design and wording pretty loose.

Sunday Book Scan: Faust

Among the black and white illustrators Harry Clarke is not as well known as Aubrey Beardsley. Of course Beardsley is the man who brought the whole shebang of darkness in Art Nouveau, but Harry Clarke's stylization is more to my liking. At a glimpse there's no discernible difference between Aubrey's work and Clarke. Look closely and you will see how Clarke deviate from Beardsley in regard on how he chose to portray his subjects. Clarke tends to draw characters with elongated body parts, huge eyes  and long lashes, while Beardsley drew somewhat  simplified rounded  human forms reminiscing characters from Japanese ukiyoe. At that I conclude, what Beardsley has taken Clarke gave back. Clarke's influences are traceable in 70s-80s Shojo Manga like the Rose of Versailles and Garasu no Kamen , and Japanese promising artists such as  Aya Kato (whose early works somehow, I suspect, influenced Camille Rose Garcia's recent works) and Takato Yamamoto. Isn't it great to know how much art inspires and evolves?

Enough with the name throws, anyway, I found this book in the corner of a used book section, as my other treasures this too is someone's garbage. Click pic to enlarge and enjoy its glory!

Kota ini hidup dari kesedihan. Langitnya selalu abu-abu dengan sentuhan aroma kemuraman. Tak ada yang suka akhir yang bahagia.

”Eh bagus bukan filmnya?”

”Iya tapi lebih baik dua-duanya mati di akhir cerita, lebih tragis.”

“Kenapa? Sehabis mati berkali-kali, terus hidup lagi, masakah tak diberi kesempatan buat hidup bahagia?”

“Nah, itulah masalahnya, hidup bahagia itu cuma ada di film-film dan cerita. Kenyataannya mana ada yang seperti itu.”

“Tapi aku suka saat mereka berdua membicarakan kematian si atas  ranjang.”

“Aku suka saat hidup orang-orang yang ditemuinya berubah seiring dengan perubahan keputusan yang diambil di kehidupan selanjutnya.”

Lalu hening, lamat-lamat. Kebahagiaan lebih mudah jika ia maya. Karena kenyatan selalu membenturkan diri dan memasungnya.

I’m starting a new weekly posting, it will be blogged *hopefully* every Sunday.  I pretty much understand how tricky it is to find FREE good hi-res images when you need one.  I have been using Googled  images for quite a while and it’s about time I return all that  favors back.  For now let’s just call it, the Sunday Book Scans, till I could came up with a catchier phrase.  

I decide to start this book-scan thing with the oldest volume in the vault.  Unless you’re a vampire, dear reader, this book is older than the age of two perhaps even three of us combine.  Given to me by one of dearest friend, it has become one of my most treasured possession and now I am sharing its beauty with you.

Merci Martine

She has been called by numerous names, from a plain-ish "Debbie" to  an exotic blossoming rose of "Aysegul". To me, and perhaps the rest of 20+ Indonesian girls, she has always been "si Tini". Tini stories offer dreams of a pretty pastel world of non saccharinic sweetness. A world so girlishly perfect where everything are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. Away are the days of sexually charged figurines of improbable proportion like "Barbie"and "Bratz", or also the porn-starrifics "My Little Pony G3" (Triple Treat, Sunny Daze, Candy Cane).I recently found out that her real name is Martine.

Whatever name she might be using, I know  I have always wanted to be her, for she was essentially "living the dream".And yet a Martine-dream was never seemed to be too far fetched.  The stories were enthused with such charms and innocent enthusiasm so that whatever she might be doing, whether it's ballet or tending the house while cooking awesome dinner for Mom and Dad, it always felt like I could do it too.  Her trademark pink frocks were never too frilly to stop her from  climbing trees, making a birdhouse, trekking the woods, or hop on a hot-air balloon.
